General Reference: Cataloging

Basically cataloging in the General Reference Section -- probably all libraries today-- do copyloging as well. 

Second day in Gen Ref and the works are boring. I swear the weather and the fact that I have a lot of other things to do for my other subjects makes doing OJT a lot harder. 

I blame my laziness for this LOL.

In copyloging I was given 10 accession numbers and have to check OHIO Link and/or Cambridge and copy some necessary items specially the link from Cambridge since I was to catalog ebooks from Cambrigde (based on my understanding)

Right now I thought of writing my journal while I wait for the book to be given to me to index.

Honestly cataloging and indexing is a simple work but I don’t like it.

It’s funny how the staff work but at the same time go to Facebook. I do that sometimes since I feel what they feel; sitting for 8 hours doing library work in an air conditioned place and a comfy chair. I think they do that to avoid getting asleep. I sure as hell do.

General Reference: Indexing

There are list of things that must be accomplished upon entering the General Reference Section. Indexing, Cataloging, A group project, Reference Services and Manning the Internet Counter.

First you are to be given a book about the people in the Philippines. Mostly these are reference books regarding the national heroes, the cabinets members of the Senate and etc.

Second, you must make a record in the ilib database for each person.

Third, make proper subject headings for each person.

I did indexing for most of my stay in the General Reference Section.

There was one instance I used the account of Sir Eli and it got a bit tricky when I was doing my IPB since I have to add an additional step in saving.

I would basically change the section from cataloging to General Reference 

General Reference: Reference Desk and Spring Titles for Extract Checking

I arrive in the general reference section at 9:50 am after my 114 class a while back. To be honest I am quite burned out this week but I must do what must be done to pass my subjects and graduate on time. Now I am manning the internet counter which is the only job I think that I love. Maybe reference work is my calling. HAHA!

I haven't gotten decent pictures for our group project yet which pissed me off since there are a lot of great sights to capture.

I also did Extract Checking for Spring Titles (specifically all the books in letter S). All I have to do is just remove the excess copies in the library's google excel and merge them into one row.

General Reference: Internet Counter and Control Desk

Internet counter is soo stressful. I got plenty of errors especially during the computation of hours. I suck at math okay so I need a lot of assistance and the library staff wasn’t helpful because they told me to do it manually and I was struggling and the line was getting longer and I was getting anxious and a bit flustered because I feel their stares at me, judging me.

And here I thought this section would be the most fun and it is if not stressful. Eventually I got the hang of it. The computation thanks to excel and the patience of the students waiting, I still get errors here and there but hey I am only human after all.

The reservation for the discussion is a bit stressful as well and here I thought night shift would be a bit more lax. Hell no! Anyways two or three group of students waiting in line for the discussion room and I am like looking for a needle in a hay stack looking for the said student/s so that they could get their reservation in order (hinanap ko pa sila para ibigay ang free slot para naman may use ang nireserve nila) I ain’t like the library staff, well some of them to say the least, that doesn’t care about the patrons even if I have a lot of work to do.

This is the end product or rather the number of users I got to handle while being on the internet counter.

In the internet counter you are also in charge in handling the lost and found service. I dealt with one or two particular students who lost something throughout the day.

This task is not part of the list of items that we should do but due to lack of personnel, I was tasked to man the control counter for a few minutes.
